Mountain Mosor Croatia

mosorMosor is a mountain range located near the town of Split on the Adriatic coast. It stretches from the pass of Klis in the northwest to the Cetina River in the southeast. The highest peak is Veliki Kabal (1339m), and one of the most visited peaks is Vickov stup (1325 m). At the top Sveti Jure (1319 m) is a Roman Catholic chapel of the same name. There are no inhabited areas on the mountain above 600 meters. At the foothill there is Mediterranean evergreen vegetation. Up to 1000 meters is the zone of pubescent oak, black ash and such. The zone of oriental hornbeam is the highest as it reaches the top of Mosor, and it contains white ash, yew, sycamore maple, cotoneaster and mountain elm. The air of the barren land is filled with smells of sage, oregano, wormwood and winter savory. The animal world is various. Some unexpected discoveries were found on Mosor, like olm (Proteus anguinus),which was found in 1979 in pit called Cuderina jama, and also an endemic Mosor lizard (Lacerta mosorensis) which lives in higher area. Wild animals that live on Mosor are hare, badger, skunk, fox, weasel and marten, occasionally you can see wolf, boar, mouflon and leap. There are also lot of birds such as rock partridge, pheasant, raven, hawk, haggard, short-toed eagle and other.
